It is increasingly commonplace for architects to make staircases a design feature within a building. Typically the architects will specify the materials to be used, the general appearance of the staircase and the angle and number of treads. It is then left up to the stair supplier to design the stair structure to be strong enough, meet with building control regulations and satisfy the customer. In the past Solve Engineering has worked for various staircase suppliers by developing architects designs into full engineering designs for both stairs and balustrading. This typically results in the generation of general assembly drawings, fabrication drawings and setting out drawings for site. Where structural design checks are required, these are carried out by an independent structural engineer. Below are some examples of stairs we have detailed.
