Landmark Sculpture

(Snapshots of the upper part of the solidmodel as developed during the design process)

When Newtownabbey Borough Council wanted to create a landmark feature for Whiteabbey, it commissioned local landscape designer Stephen Todd to design a sculpture for the Station Road Roundabout. Stephen designed the overall appearance of the sculpture defining it’s shape, size colour and functionality. After a competitive tendering process, the council awarded the detail design, build and installation to a Coleraine based specialist steel fabricator, McKendry Fabrications Ltd. This fabricator had previously been successful in delivering the “Endeavour Sculpture” (see pic below) to the nearby Valley Leisure Centre with design detailing assistance from Solve Engineering.

Upon being awarded the contract, McKendry Fabrications again enlisted the services of Solve Engineering to develop the detail design of the “Landmark Sculpture”. Working closely with structural engineering consultants I.Scott &Asc., Solve developed solid models of the various parts of the sculpture using Solidworks. From these models assembly drawings were generated for approval before developing full detail drawings to enable manufacture.

The design incorporates 3 wind vanes rotating on a specially designed, lubricant free, ball race that is suitable for coastal regions. The sculpture is capped with a 2.6m LED illuminated pinnacle. The entire structure is over 16m (53ft) tall, the main body is manufactured from 10mm plate steel and the complete sculpture weighs in excess of 4.7 Tonnes. In total 40 drawings were generated for this project.
